Day 48 (6/23/22): A (Slight) Restart

Start:                  Lancaster, PA

 End:                    New Holland, PA

 Miles:                 12

 Elevation:           450 feet

The plan for the rest of the ride has been readjusted.  The 90 miles to my brother’s house which was supposed to be completed in a day now will likely take 4, and the 70 miles from there to the Shore—again originally planned as a one-day ride—will take either 2 or 3 days.  The theme is “one day at a time” with the goal clearly on finishing and staying healthy.  Day 1 started today.

After a truly miserable Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, things turned positive yesterday and I felt good enough today to take a short 12-mile ride through Amish farm country.  Very level and not too busy—perfect to see if I have any endurance.

I rode later in the afternoon as it was rainy until around 1 p.m. and my pace was slow, slow, slow.  Other than a slight hill at the end, I can’t say I exerted myself at all.  I made it to New Holland just fine and am pretty pleased with how I felt throughout.  The real test will be how I feel in the morning.

Forgetting about Covid for a second, the ride was lovely.  There were lots of buggies, cute kids who always marvel at the lights and bright clothes I wear, and lovely scenery.  Two things are striking about many Amish farms: the overwhelming aroma of jam and the beautiful flowers they’ve planted in front of their houses.  It really made for nice riding.

After the ride, we treated ourselves to Philly Cheesesteaks in New Holland and came home for more Penn State Creamery ice cream.  I finished the Sticky Bun ice cream yesterday and have moved on to WPSX Coffee.  (WPSX is the public television station in State College.)  Tish motored through her Happy Happy Joy Joy (coconut ice cream with chocolate chips and butter-roasted almonds) and is now working on Death by Chocolate.

What am I Grateful for Today

Tish again tested negative this morning.  Enough said.
